+inspiring women+ lorena & louisa

Yeah, when I was a shorty I wanted to get a skateboard. Worries of broken bones stopped my mom from fulfilling my dream. In middle school I'd go hang out at EMB and watch the skaters doing ollies under the freeway and front tail slides on the steps near the fountain. A lot of pro skaters there. When I was 20 I got my first board, shared with a friend. Playing drums was one of my youth-time dreams. It came true 20 years later. I've still got that skateboard.

A show not to be missed by anyone!

"This will be an epic celebration of successful, powerful, female artists working together to rise up in song to build community, empower and inspire," says musician, activist and WomenROCK visionary, *bernadette* (who organized the event). Working together is what causes action, action to movement, movement to inspiration and inspiration to growth, we are rocking the music industry in our own powerful, forward-moving and conscious-permeating way! There will be very special guest sit-ins by nationally acclaimed musician friends and allies of these rockin' females: Gabby La La of Les Claypool's Band, James Nash of the Waybacks, John Krimstock of Lauren Hill, Jay Bowman, Dave Brogan of ALO, Veronica Klaus, poet Sam Flot, Lance Lazwell and many, many more! Women do really ROCK!

WomenROCK is supported by the NOW Organization who will be present the evening of the event. NOW is the largest, most comprehensive feminist advocacy group in the United States. Our purpose is to take action to bring women into full participation in society — sharing equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities with men, while living free from discrimination. NOW is one of the few multi-issue progressive organizations in the United States. NOW stands against all oppression, recognizing that racism, sexism and homophobia are interrelated, and that other forms of oppression such as classism and ableism work together with these three to keep power and privilege concentrated in the hands of a few.

Additional supporters, WomenROCK has raised funds for the following Bay Area Groups:

IMPACT Bay Area

Breast Cancer Action

Blue Bear School of Music

SF Women's Clinic

Gina Missing Persons

About the music:

Kim Manning- P-Funk Allstar, Kim Manning, has been hitting the national scene with her combination of Funk, Rock, and Hip-Hop. As an improvisational artist Kim has been seen singing with such great acts as Garaj Mahal, Blue Turtle Seduction, JFJO, Papa Molly, the Everyone Orchestra, String Cheese Incident, and her own Jam Factory. This VH1 celebreality star blows you away with her 4 1/2 range vocals and Fender Rhodes playing. Kim is also a member of WomenROCK.

Pamela Parker-"Parker oozes organic soul in her performances and arrangements," says Music Connection Magazine of Pamela Parker's latest release, Beautiful Day. Pamela has toured nationally and in addition, also fronts an east coast outfit called "Roots a Risin'". Her live band shines with a Juicy-Bluesy-Funky-Soul-Rock sound. Pamela also plays regularly at The Fillmore and is always seen sitting in with great acts that come through the area, recently singing with Bernie Worrell with Eric McFadden and RonKat at The Boom Boom Room. She has appeared on bills with many, including the Mickey Hart Band, Steve Kimock, George Clinton and the Parliament-Funkadelic, Arrested Development, Rusted Root, Citizen Cope and many more. Pam is also a member of WomenROCK.

*bernadette* is taking the stage by storm with her vibrant musical presence, unique vocal sound and a flower in her hair. She is described as 'soulful angst- Bonnie Raitt meets Courtney Love'. *bernadette* writes heartfelt, sultry songs that encapsulate the essence of San Francisco's timeless sound with a 60's sensibility and authentic purity. She has played the grand rooms at The Fillmore, Independent, Slim's, Bottom of the Hill, Café Du Nord and festivals around the Bay. Backed by co-conspirateur, Garrin Benfield on guitar, the two harmonize and play together akin to Gillian Welch & David Rawlings but with a brutally honest, soul-bearing live performance. She has been joined on stage with touring greats, Brett Dennon, RadioActive of Spearhead and many more. *bernadette* is the visionary and founding member of WomenROCK.

Valerie Orth is described as "neo-Ani," Her lyrics hit hard personally and politically. Her music grooves hard, ranging from folk to funk and she does it all with a soft tornado of passion. With her new, dynamic rock band, their music creeps into the subconscious of the listeners, often taking them to a dream world. Valerie is backed by Abigail Picache on drums and other seasoned musicians singing beautiful harmonies and enhancing the band's constantly-evolving sound. She is also one of the founding members of WomenROCK.
